The Bear who went to War
by Alan Pollock; illustrated by Bryony Thomson.
Based on the true story of the bear cub adopted by young Polish solders who fought in the cruel and decisive Battle of Monte Cassino in May 1944. Wojtek became the soldiers' companion through the Italian campaign and, after they made him an Officer, stood alongside them in battle, ultimately emigrating with them to Scotland when all were left stateless at the end of the war. A story of loyalty, friendship, family and displacement amongst the senseless horror of war.
32pp paperback; printed in the UK.
Alan Pollock will be talking about the book and his adaptation of it for the theatre at the Festival of Brilliant on Friday 11th July and will be joined there by Bryony Thomson on Saturday 12th.
