Paris, France – Chimera of Notre-Dame Cathedral – Postcard
This historical postcard captures a remarkable close-up of one of the chimeras of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. Perched high on the cathedral’s iconic towers, this sculpted eagle-like creature overlooks the city, accompanied by an intricately carved grotesque figure at its base. The misty background emphasizes the mysterious and haunting beauty of Gothic architecture.
The chimeras and gargoyles of Notre-Dame were added during the cathedral’s 19th-century restoration, led by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. While Notre-Dame was originally completed in 1345, many of its medieval sculptures had deteriorated over time. In the mid-1800s, Viollet-le-Duc reimagined the cathedral’s stone guardians, creating the famous grotesques and chimeras that have since become synonymous with the cathedral’s mystical aura.
Unlike gargoyles, which serve as rainwater spouts, chimeras are purely decorative. These sculptures were designed to evoke the grandeur and supernatural imagery of medieval Gothic art, inspired by medieval bestiaries, myths, and legends. Their purpose was to ward off evil spirits while also adding a striking visual element to the cathedral’s exterior.
Notre-Dame de Paris has stood as a symbol of French heritage, religious devotion, and architectural ingenuity for over 800 years. It has witnessed coronations, revolutions, and wars, surviving through history’s greatest upheavals. After the devastating fire of 2019, extensive restoration efforts have been underway to preserve this architectural masterpiece.
