Menton, France – Le Pont Saint-Louis – Postcard Early 20th Century

Regular price £6.00 GBP

This postcard offers a romanticized view of Le Pont Saint-Louis, a striking stone bridge linking Menton, France to the border of Italy.
Le Pont Saint-Louis served as a symbolic and physical gateway between France and Italy, just west of the coastal town of Menton. Dating back to the 19th century, the bridge became a key point of passage, especially during times of political change and war. During the Belle Époque, the area attracted artists and tourists for its scenic beauty and the intrigue of crossing a national frontier so seamlessly nestled in natural splendor. The Pont Saint-Louis also carried strategic importance during both world wars.
The reverse side is printed in the standard French “Carte Postale” layout, featuring both handwritten correspondence and address. It is postmarked and bears two green 5c "Semeuse" stamps from the République Française.
Front Text: "Menton" "Le Pont Saint-Louis – LL"
The handwritten note on the reverse reads:
"Dear M. I hope you are well. This is my address for a few weeks and I am having fine weather and lovely times. Kindest regards to you and yours. Always sincerely, M."
