Hamburg, Germany – Kersten Miles Bridge – Postcard Early 20th Century
This postcard features the elegant Kersten-Miles-Brücke, an arched stone bridge gracefully spanning a shaded waterway in central Hamburg.
The Kersten-Miles-Brücke, built in 1897 and named after the Hamburg mayor Kersten Miles (1370–1420), is one of the city's most beautiful and historic bridges. Located near the Michel (St. Michael's Church), it served both aesthetic and infrastructural purposes, enhancing the visual landscape of Hamburg’s inner city while linking important thoroughfares. The bridge’s richly decorated balustrades and small pavilions reflect the architectural tastes of Wilhelmine Germany, a period of national pride and urban beautification.
The reverse is printed in the multilingual “Union Postale Universelle” format.
