Founded in 1238 by Countess Joan of Flanders, the Beguinage of Kortrijk provided a safe haven for beguines—women who dedicated themselves to a religious life without taking formal monastic vows. The community flourished throughout the Middle Ages, with its whitewashed houses and small chapel serving as a place of worship and reflection.
