Belém, Portugal – Igreja dos Jerónimos – Postcard Early 20th Century
This postcard presents the grand facade of the Igreja dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Church), a stunning example of Manueline architecture located in the historic district of Belém, Lisbon.
The Igreja dos Jerónimos, part of the larger Jerónimos Monastery complex, was begun in 1501 under the reign of King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India. Built on the site of a former hermitage where sailors prayed before setting out, the church became a symbol of Portugal’s maritime power. Its elaborate Manueline style incorporates maritime elements and religious iconography, unique to Portugal’s late Gothic architecture. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the tombs of famous Portuguese figures, including Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões.
Postcard features the classic “Union Postale Universelle” divided back, with text in both French and Portuguese, typical of early 1900s European cards intended for international mailing.
Front Text: "BELÉM – Egreja dos Jeronymos"
