The National Emergency Medal was instituted in 1926 and awarded by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to volunteers who served on the railway during the General Strike in May 1926.
Obverse: Britannia is seated to left holding a shield in her left hand and in her right hand an olive branch. Above are emblems of England, Wales and Scotland (Tudor rose, dragon and thistle). Inscription.
Obverse legend: FOR SERVICE IN NATIONAL EMERGENCY MAY 1926
Reverse: Three classically dressed women, one front facing, whilst the other two face left and right respectively. The predominant woman has arms outstretched on which are supported locomotive engines.
Reverse legend: E. GILLICK' / 'LARGITAS MVNERIS SALVS REPVBLICAE
