Towards the end of the 13th century, sterlings of the Low Countries began to circulate widely (but unofficially) in England, and this type, with its bare-headed bust, was colloquially known as a 'pollard'. Both M's on obverse are Roman (as Mayhew 9); Both m's on reverse are Lombardic, (as Mayhew 10)
