Saint-Malo, France – Les Terre-neuvas dans le Port – Postcard Early 20th Century
This postcard captures a row of tall-masted sailing vessels, known as Terre-neuvas, docked in the bustling harbor of Saint-Malo.
Saint-Malo, a walled port city on France’s northern coast, was a major center of privateering and transatlantic fishing. The Terre-neuvas were deep-sea fishing schooners that sailed from Saint-Malo to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to catch cod, a vital industry from the 16th century well into the early 20th.
