This postcard captures a sweeping panoramic view of Rouen, as seen from the famous transporter bridge (Pont Transbordeur), once a marvel of early 20th-century engineering.
Rouen, capital of the Normandy region, has long been a crucial hub of trade and navigation along the Seine. The postcard’s view is taken from the Pont Transbordeur de Rouen, completed in 1899. This transporter bridge was one of only a few of its kind in the world at the time. Suspended on high steel towers, it carried a gondola back and forth across the river, allowing ships to pass unimpeded underneath—an innovative solution before the widespread construction of tall or moveable bridges.
During the early 1900s, Rouen was one of France’s busiest ports, exporting agricultural products and importing colonial goods. The postcard image shows a flourishing river economy, with tramlines, warehouses, and riverboats crowding the left bank. The bridge itself became a beloved landmark until it was tragically destroyed during World War II in 1940.
The reverse side is designed in the elegant French “Carte Postale” format, with space for correspondence and address.
