Rome, Italy – Terme di Caracalla – Postcard Mid-20th Century
This vintage postcard shows a view within the massive Terme di Caracalla (Baths of Caracalla), one of the grandest and most impressive bath complexes of ancient Rome.
Commissioned by Emperor Caracalla and inaugurated in 216 AD, the Terme di Caracalla were among the largest public baths (thermae) of the Roman Empire. Capable of accommodating over 1,600 bathers at a time, the complex spanned over 25 hectares and included not only bathing facilities—such as the caldarium (hot bath), tepidarium (warm bath), and frigidarium (cold bath)—but also libraries, gymnasiums, gardens, and shops.
The site fell into ruin after the Gothic invasions in the 6th century and was later used as a source of building materials during the Renaissance. Today, it stands as a haunting yet magnificent
