This historical postcard showcases the magnificent Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, Italy, designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century. The grand staircase, known as the Cordonata, leads to the Palazzo Senatorio, which serves as Rome’s city hall. On either side of the piazza are the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo, which house the Capitoline Museums, one of the world’s oldest public museums..
The Capitoline Hill, one of Rome’s legendary seven hills, has been a center of political and religious life since ancient times. In 1536, Michelangelo was commissioned to redesign the square, aligning it with Rome’s new Renaissance identity. The equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, once standing at the center, was a highlight of the piazza, though the original has since been moved to the Musei Capitolini for preservation.
This postcard, follows the classic early 20th-century divided-back format, allowing space for both correspondence and an address.
