This postcard features the Statue of Strasbourg, one of the eight allegorical statues representing French cities at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
Erected in the 1830s, the Statue of Strasbourg became an especially poignant symbol of national loss and hope after the Franco-Prussian War. Following the annexation of Alsace and parts of Lorraine by Germany, Parisians frequently adorned the statue with black veils and funeral wreaths, treating it as a shrine to the lost province. It stood as a silent protest and reminder of Strasbourg’s “captivity” until its return to France after World War I.
The reverse features the standard “Carte Postale” format with a note regarding international correspondence restrictions.
Front Text: "4068. PARIS – La Statue de Strasbourg – Place de la Concorde"

"CARTE POSTALE" “Correspondance” and “Adresse” sections
