This postcard captures the iconic façade of the Palais Garnier, commonly known as the Paris Opéra. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by architect Charles Garnier and inaugurated in 1875, the building stands as one of the crowning achievements of 19th-century architecture.
Commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III as part of Baron Haussmann’s grand redesign of Paris, the Opéra was envisioned as both a temple to music and a symbol of imperial power. The building's rich ornamentation includes gilded statues of Harmony and Poetry crowning the corners, while inside, the lavish Grand Staircase and Marc Chagall’s ceiling painting continue to enchant visitors.
In its early years, the Opéra was the epicenter of Parisian cultural life, hosting performances by composers like Charles Gounod and Jules Massenet. It also famously served as the setting for Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera.
