Montreux, Switzerland – L’embarcadère – Postcard Early 20th Century
This early 20th-century postcard presents a picturesque view of the lakeside promenade and pier (l’embarcadère) in Montreux, Switzerland.
Montreux, located in the canton of Vaud, became a prominent tourist destination in the 19th century, known for its mild microclimate, breathtaking Alpine scenery, and sophisticated lakeside resorts. The construction of steamer piers like this one helped connect Montreux to other cities along Lake Geneva, facilitating both trade and luxury tourism.
Paddle steamers were a key part of Swiss transportation infrastructure at the time and are still cherished symbols of Belle Époque travel on the lake. Many of these vessels were operated by the CGN (Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman), and their elegant design and punctual service became integral to the Montreux experience.
Montreux’s beauty, enhanced by this elegant infrastructure, attracted famous residents and visitors, including Lord Byron, Igor Stravinsky, and later, Freddie Mercury. The setting captured here reflects the town’s golden era, when international travelers strolled its promenades and embarked on scenic cruises to nearby towns such as Vevey, Lausanne, and Geneva.
