This historical postcard presents a picturesque view of the Erechtheion, one of the most iconic temples on the Acropolis of Athens. The temple, known for its elegant Caryatids, is a masterpiece of classical Greek architecture, standing as a testament to the artistic and structural brilliance of the 5th century BCE.
The Erechtheion, built between 421 and 406 BCE, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as a temple dedicated to Athena and Poseidon, the two main deities associated with Athens. The most striking feature of the temple is the Porch of the Caryatids, where six sculpted female figures replace traditional columns, supporting the structure with their graceful presence.
The Erechtheion is located on the north side of the Acropolis, an area associated with numerous religious myths, including the legendary battle between Athena and Poseidon over the city’s patronage. The ruins in the foreground illustrate the passage of time, while the warm hues of the hand-colored lithographic print enhance the postcard’s artistic appeal.
The reverse side of the postcard follows a Greek and French "CARTE POSTALE" format.
