Athens, Greece – Cemetery of the Tileries (Kerameikos) – Postcard
This postcard presents a beautifully tinted view of the ancient Kerameikos cemetery in Athens, known in antiquity as the resting place of warriors, philosophers, and civic leaders.
Kerameikos, located at the northwestern edge of ancient Athens, was both a potters’ quarter (from which the word "ceramic" derives) and the city's most significant burial ground. It was situated along the Sacred Way leading to Eleusis and featured ornate tombs and monuments to prominent citizens. Rediscovered and excavated in the 19th century, it quickly became a celebrated archaeological site and a symbol of classical heritage.
The back is printed in Greek and French and follows the Universal Postal Union format.
Front Text: "ATHÈNES. – Cimetière du Céramique. / ATHENS. – Cemetery of the Tileries. / ΑΘΗΝΑΙ. – Ο Κεραμεικός."
