1914 Scheveningen, Netherlands – Boulevard, Oranje- en Palace-Hotel – Postcard
This postcard captures the elegant seaside promenade of Scheveningen, a district of The Hague, featuring the iconic Oranje Hotel and Palace Hotel along the bustling boulevard.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Scheveningen had become the Netherlands’ most renowned seaside resort. The Oranje Hotel, opened in 1871, and the Palace Hotel, inaugurated later, were prestigious landmarks that attracted an international clientele.
This postcard was mailed on 2 July 1914, just weeks before the start of World War I. It features two green Netherlands 2½ cent stamps and a circular Rotterdam postmark.
The reverse side includes a handwritten message in English:
Dear Mother,
We are still enjoying ourselves, had a grand time last night with a gentleman. We are just waiting for the train to go to Germany.
