Regular price £10.00 GBP

This historical postcard showcases the magnificent interior of St. Knud’s Church (Sankt Knuds Kirke) in Odense, Denmark.
St. Knud’s Church, named after King Canute IV (Knud den Hellige), is one of Denmark’s most significant medieval churches. Originally built in the 12th century, the church underwent modifications over the centuries but remains a stunning example of Brick Gothic architecture. The high altar, visible at the far end of the nave, is one of Denmark’s most beautiful altarpieces, created in the 15th century by renowned German sculptor Claus Berg.
St. Knud’s Church is also famous for being the resting place of King Canute IV, who was assassinated in 1086 and later canonized as Denmark’s patron saint. His tomb lies in the crypt beneath the church, making it an important pilgrimage site.
The reverse side of the postcard follows a Danish "BREVKORT" format, with a handwritten message dated August 12, 1906, sent from Odense to England. The letter discusses the sender’s experiences and reflections on their stay.
Handwritten Message on Reverse:
"Dear Mrs. Willis,
I was quite delighted at length to get a letter from you, but I would like to put off answering it till today fortnight. By then, I’ll be able to tell you all about my new post & whether it is difficult to teach so many in a big school. I am rather looking forward to it.
What a pity that Meanie has left you. I do hope you have got a nice new cook.
With love for all,
The Volcano."
The postcard is addressed to Mrs. Willis, Windrush Vicarage, Burford, Oxfordshire, England, and features a Danish 10 øre stamp postmarked in Odense.
