Follower of Ludovico Cardi known as il Cigoli (1559–1613)
Christ crowned with thorns
Oil on canvas
Italy, 19th century

Extraordinary portrayal of the suffering Christ, executed by a refined follower of Ludovico Cardi, known as Cigoli. The work stands out for its high pictorial quality, the delicacy of the complexion, and the intense expressiveness of the face, full of pathos and spirituality. The soft features, the golden light surrounding the figure, and the intimate composure of the pose recall seventeenth-century models from the Correggio school and the emotional tones of Guido Reni and Ludovico Carracci.

Derived from the famous painting preserved at the Corsini Gallery in Florence, the study was considered preparatory for the altarpiece of the Risaliti Chapel in Santa Croce, but the present version was likely conceived as an autonomous work for the 19th-century elite collectors.
