German Grobe (1857-1938) - Zeilschepen op zee
Beautiful painting by the master German Grobe in very good condition.
Grobe studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and later also attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
His rough work was initially strongly influenced by Eugen Dücker and Andreas Achenbach. From the time he came to the Netherlands, he saw Hendrik Willem Mesdag and started painting in the style of the Hague School. Later, his compatriot Max Liebermann, whom he met in Katwijk, also influenced his work.
His best paintings, watercolors, and drawings can compete with the top of the Hague School.
Works by Grobe can be seen among others in the Katwijk Museum, the Lakenhal in Leiden, Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, the Altonaer Museum in Hamburg, and the Museum Kunst der Westküste in Föhr.
