Photographer's biography:

HUMBERTO MAYOL (January 10, 1955. Havana, Cuba)

EDUCATION: Bachelor of Journalism. University of Havana, Cuba.

He has been a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) since 1993.

Since 2007 he has been part of the Palomas Project, an audiovisual production house for social activism, belonging to the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) as a photographer, director and director of photography. He has participated in the production of more than 40 documentaries.

Her personal work revolves around everyday life, with an anthropological and visual memory sense. Divided into two large series: “Shared Memory” and “Everyday Spaces”. The first one groups her analog work and the second, from 2004, her digital work.

He has participated in more than 80 solo and group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, Europe, China, Japan and Latin America.

He has received more than twenty awards. His photographic work can be found in various collections such as the Fototeca de Cuba, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Lehigh University Art Gallery, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, the FNAC Photographic Collection, Paris, the Southeast Florida Museum, United States, the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the Artistic Heritage of the Simón Bolívar University, Venezuela, among others.

His photographs have also been published in the catalogue “La imagen sin Límites, Bellas Artes, Cuba. In 2000 he returned to Havana and joined the Council of Cultural Houses as a photographer. And between 2003 and 2007 he worked at the Ministry of Culture, at Fotocreart.

Between 1995 and 1999 he lived in Caracas, Venezuela, where he taught photography workshops at the Universidad Simón Bolívar. He also worked for the newspaper El Nacional, advertising agencies and for the Comptroller General of the Republic of Venezuela on the production of a book about this institution.

Between 1980 and 1995 he worked in the Cuban press as a photojournalist. He founded the newspaper Tribuna de la Habana and later became photojournalist and head of photography for Bohemia magazine. He also collaborated with other national and foreign publications.

He began his professional career in Photography in 1976, in the Propaganda Media Workshop of the Provincial Committee of PCC, in the City of Havana.
