Gerolamo Varese was born in Porto Maurizio in 1860.

He is moving to Genoa to attend Colombo High School to continue his studies.
A twenty-one-year-old goes to Munich to attend the local Academy of Fine Arts, following the teachings of Theodor Her.

Soon, his somewhat rebellious character drives him to abandon the courses at the Academy, along with his German painter friend Maennehen.
Back in Italy, Gerolamo Varese, after a brief stay in Capri, moves to Rome; but his wandering seems to have no end.
In fact, he/she returns to Germany, staying there for five years, then departs for Hamburg and Frankfurt.
Finally, he/she finally settles in Genoa, where he/she pursues their artistic career.
A painter of great sensitivity, Gerolamo Varese is linked to the late 19th-century tradition, with a romantic taste. He often interprets and depicts marine landscapes and port views.
Characteristic of the use of color, vivid and rich in shades, especially when depicting sunset landscapes.
His palette remains, probably, influenced by long stays in northern Europe and by those atmospheric characteristics so different from ours.
She has exhibited at the Genovese Promoter since 1898 and has participated in numerous important exhibitions both in Italy and abroad.
His art evolves towards an impressionist matrix with symbolist hints.
The works are preserved at the Pinacoteca Civica di Imperia, in numerous German and Swiss museums and art galleries, as well as within the scope of important public and private collections.
Two of his large paintings depicting the Port of Genoa are kept on the second floor of the Genoa Chamber of Commerce.
