Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was a 17th-century Flemish painter, famous for his elegant and refined portraits. A pupil of Peter Paul Rubens, he quickly established himself as one of the great masters of his time. He worked in Italy before becoming the official court painter to King Charles I of England, where he revolutionized aristocratic portraiture with a fluid, expressive and sophisticated style. His influence was felt in European painting for centuries.
