Because of its association with death and rebirth represented by the many eyes on the mask, it was likely worn during funerary rites. It's also possible that these masks, or something similar, were worn in combat or pre-battle rituals. Mangrove-swampy, forested area straddling the border of Ivory Coast and Liberia is home to the Grebo and Krou peoples.The mysterious nature of the spirits hiding in the dense vegetation is reflected in the foreboding appearance of the masks of this area. The dancer's improved eyesight is further supported by the additional eyes. Extremely impressive cubist and surrealist style. On the inside, you can see lovely portage marks.
