This historical postcard features Le Château de Thiepval, a grand manor located in Thiepval, France, before its destruction during World War I. The elegant château, built in the 18th century, showcases a symmetrical façade.
Thiepval is a small village in the Somme department of northern France, known for its tragic role in World War I. Before the war, the château belonged to the De Clermont-Tonnerre family and was considered an important estate in the region. However, during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, the village and château became a battleground between British and German forces. Thiepval was completely destroyed, and the château did not survive the war.
Today, Thiepval is best known for the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, a monument honoring over 72,000 British and South African soldiers who died in the Battle of the Somme and have no known graves.
