This postcard depicts the elegant Place Royale (Koningsplein) in Brussels, a neoclassical square that stands as one of the city’s most refined architectural ensembles.
Built between 1775 and 1782 on the ruins of the old Coudenberg Palace, Place Royale became the ceremonial heart of Brussels, linking the royal district with cultural and political institutions. Its harmonious design, with uniform facades and classical lines, exemplified Enlightenment urban planning. The Church of Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg served as the parish church for the royal family. By the Belle Époque, when this postcard was produced, Place Royale was a favorite promenade spot and a subject of countless souvenir views sent across Europe.
