1854 Folk Art Coin Locket Napoleon III Enamelled Painted Portrait

This locket is an original French 10 centimes dated 1854, issued during the reign of Napoleon III, and converted into a locket. The outer shell is formed from a genuine circulation coin. One side shows the obverse with the portrait of Napoleon III and the legend “NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR” with the date 1854. The reverse displays the imperial eagle with the inscriptions “EMPIRE FRANÇAIS” and “DIX CENTIMES.”
The coin has been cut and fitted with a metal hinge, allowing it to open. Inside is an enamelled painted portrait of a woman, executed on a circular insert. The female figure is shown in a Victorian-style head covering and dress, consistent with mid 19th-century fashion. The enamel painting shows age-related cracking, surface wear, and losses.
