1978 Portugal 20 Escudos Banknote
Obverse: Portrait of Admiral Gago Coutinho (1869–1959), Portuguese aviation pioneer and navigator, at right. The Portuguese coat of arms appears at top center. Decorative compass rose and geometric guilloche patterns in background. Denomination “20” shown in each corner, with “VINTE ESCUDOS OURO” and issue date “Lisboa, 4 de Outubro de 1978.” Serial number “AFH034611” printed twice in black.
Reverse: Features a depiction of the Fairey IIID seaplane used by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral in their historic first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic in 1922. Navigational instruments and maps appear in the background, highlighting Coutinho’s innovations in air navigation. Denomination “20” in all corners, with “Banco de Portugal” at top.
