This vintage postcard showcases the ruins of the Palais du Sultan in Mogador, today known as Essaouira, Morocco. The palace, once a grand symbol of power and authority, was built during the reign of Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah in the 18th century. Mogador, strategically located on the Atlantic coast, was an important port city and a hub for trade and diplomacy. The Sultan's palace was part of a broader effort to fortify and develop the city into a key economic center.
The image captures the remnants of this significant structure, offering a glimpse into the historic past of Mogador before the city's modern transformation into Essaouira, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The reverse side of the postcard is unused, showing the standard correspondence and address fields, marked "Photo Piardrin, 128, Rue de la Liberté, Casablanca."
