Biarritz transformed from a whaling village into a luxurious seaside destination in the mid-19th century after being popularized by Empress Eugénie. While the Grande Plage and casinos catered to aristocrats, the Port des Pêcheurs retained its local character. Constructed in 1870, the small harbor provided shelter for fishing boats and was bordered by stone quays and crampottes—small huts for storing nets and gear. The juxtaposition of fishermen’s daily routines with high-society leisure life defines this postcard’s unique charm.

This is a lovely spot & the weather is hot and sunny. No rain since we’ve been here but very wet in Paris. The bathing is good. Very posh people here; very few English though. Went through the valley of Pyrenees by charabanc! We like the hotel. Yours, Ada Bennet.”
