Alicante’s Explanada de España, known historically as the Carretera de la Explanada, was constructed in the late 19th century and became a central social space in the city. Paved with millions of mosaic tiles in a distinctive wave pattern, it stretches along the seafront and serves as a vital link between the city’s commercial center and the harbor.
The avenue was a key part of Alicante’s urban modernization, transforming the waterfront into an area of leisure and civic pride. Grand hotels, banks, and cafés sprung up along its length, and by the mid-20th century, it had become a magnet for the elite and middle-class locals as well as foreign visitors drawn by the region’s warm climate and vibrant culture.
