This medal is the 1937 China Incident War Medal, commemorating Japanese military participation in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), often referred to as the "China Incident" by the Japanese government at the time.
This medal was awarded until the summer of 1945, and was abolished in 1946.
Obverse: The obverse side of the medal features a phoenix with outstretched wings rising above two crossed Japanese flags, symbolizing imperial power and military victory. Above the phoenix is the Imperial chrysanthemum crest, representing the Japanese emperor and imperial family. The design is surrounded by a dotted border, signifying formality and prestige. 
Obverse legend: The bar at the top reads "支那事變" (Shina Jihen), translating to "China Incident."
Reverse: The reverse side of the medal depicts a scenic view of Mount Fuji, Japan’s iconic mountain, along with rolling waves in the foreground, symbolizing Japan’s resilience and might. Beneath the depiction, Japanese characters are inscribed.
Reverse legend: The inscription reads "昭和十二年" (Showa 12th Year), translating to 1937, the year the conflict began.
