Gundula Schulze Eldowy is an internationally recognized German photographer whose work has
characterized the photographic documentation of East Germany with compelling authenticity.
She studied photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig (1979-1984) and had already
gained fame in the 1980s through her socially critical, often taboo-breaking series.
With series such as "Berlin in a Dog Night," "Street Scene," "Work," and "Nude Portraits," she
created visual chronicles of East German everyday life-raw, poetic, and uncompromisingly
authentic. Her works are considered today as photographic testimonies of exceptional
documentary value.
A turning point in her career was the encounter with the legendary photographer Robert Frank,
who invited her to New York in 1985. She lived and worked there from 1990 to 1993 and
participated among others in the exhibition "Photography 8" at the MoMA New York.
Since then, Schulze Eldowy has expanded her artistic spectrum to include color photography,
film, and sound installations. Her works have taken her around the world - including Japan,
Egypt, Peru, and Bolivia - and increasingly reflect spiritual and transcultural themes.
In 2023, she dedicated a comprehensive retrospective (
Her works are part of renowned collections such as the MoMA in New York, LACMA in Los
Angeles, the Museum Folkwang, and the Berlinische Galerie. In 1996, she received the
prestigious Higashikawa Award in Japan.
Schulze Eldowy is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts as well as the Saxon Academy of
Arts. Her work combines political testimony with artistic depth - she is considered one of
Germany's most important photographic voices.
