This postcard captures a sweeping panorama of La Rochelle as seen from the top of the Tour Saint-Sauveur.
La Rochelle, a fortified port city on the Atlantic coast of western France, has a rich maritime history stretching back to the Middle Ages. A major hub for trade, fishing, and shipbuilding, it played a significant role during the Hundred Years’ War, the Wars of Religion, and as a Huguenot stronghold. The Tour Saint-Sauveur, from which this view is taken, is one of several towers that once served as defensive lookout points and now offer panoramic views of the city. During the Belle Époque, postcards such as this were treasured by tourists as mementos of their coastal journeys and leisurely stays in the region.
