Boxing in British India was hit hard by the imposition of amateurism, in 1931 an Army Boxing Association was formed which soon came under the chairmanship of Brigadier Gort, then director of military training at army headquarters. Individuals and inter-unit team championships were reorganised, and within a few years every regiment in India had entered and there had been a vast increase in the number of military boxing tournaments all over India.
