1913 Antwerp, Belgium – Central Station and Keyserlei Avenue – Postcard

This historical postcard captures a stunning view of Antwerp Central Station (Antwerpen-Centraal), one of the most impressive railway stations in the world. Antwerp Central Station, often referred to as the "Railway Cathedral," was designed by Louis Delacenserie and inaugurated in 1905. The station’s monumental dome, intricate ironwork, and lavish interior make it a masterpiece of railway architecture. Keyserlei Avenue, leading to the station, was an important commercial and social hub, lined with cafés, shops, and theaters that attracted visitors from across Europe.
During the early 20th century, Antwerp was a key port city and an essential hub for international trade and travel. The station’s construction reflected Belgium’s prosperity and its position as a major European transport center.
The reverse side of the postcard contains a handwritten message postmarked in Ostend, Belgium, on July 22, 1913. The sender describes their visit to Antwerp, witnessing a grand procession, and even sharing a train journey with the King of Belgium. This anecdote adds a fascinating personal touch to the postcard’s historical significance.

"Dear Louie,
I am still enjoying myself. I have been to Antwerp, and you talk about pageantry! I saw a procession there, well, it could not be excelled. Not only that, but I had the pleasure of traveling both journeys in the same train as the King of Belgium.

The postcard is addressed to Miss L.K. Blakley, 29 Ball Haye St, Leek, Staffs, England, featuring a Belgian 10-cent stamp with a King Albert I postmark.
