This postcard showcases L’Église de la Madeleine, one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks, designed in the style of a classical Roman temple.
Originally commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 as a temple to honor his Grande Armée, the structure underwent several design changes before its completion in 1842 as a Roman Catholic church. L’Église de la Madeleine exemplifies the Empire style, echoing the grandeur of antiquity with its peristyle, high steps, and lack of traditional Christian cross-form layout. It remains a unique example of sacred architecture inspired more by Roman temples than Gothic cathedrals. Today, it serves as a functioning church and prominent venue for concerts and state ceremonies.
