Plaza de Cataluña, spanning more than 21,000 square meters, serves as a central junction between Barcelona's old city and its modern extension, the Eixample. Developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a symbol of progress, the square became a meeting point of transport, commerce, and civic pride. From here radiate several important avenues, including Las Ramblas and Passeig de Gràcia.
