This historical postcard features the Prince’s Palace of Monaco (Château du Prince), the official residence of the Grimaldi family.
The Prince’s Palace of Monaco, originally built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, has been home to the Grimaldi family since 1297, when François Grimaldi seized it in a legendary coup disguised as a monk. Over the centuries, the palace evolved from a military stronghold into an opulent royal residence, featuring Baroque and Renaissance architectural elements.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the palace became a major tourist attraction, reflecting Monaco’s rise as a luxury destination. Visitors from across Europe admired its historic halls, lavish state rooms, and the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony.
The reverse side of the postcard follows a classic French "Carte Postale" format, addressed to Jean Trakson in Stornoway (Scotland), and postmarked in Monte Carlo. The handwritten note also mentions Hôtel de Monaco, suggesting that the sender was staying at a prominent hotel in the principality.
Front Text: "Château du Prince – Souvenir de Monaco."
