This historical postcard captures a vibrant view of Gibraltar, showcasing the terraced houses and buildings leading up to the imposing Moorish Castle.
The Moorish Castle of Gibraltar dates back to the 8th century when the Umayyads established their presence in the Iberian Peninsula. Over centuries, the fortress played a crucial role in defending Gibraltar from numerous invasions. The Casemates, originally part of the town’s fortifications, later served as military barracks and storage facilities for British forces stationed in the territory.
This postcard was published by A. Benzaquen, Tangier, and printed in Germany. The divided-back format indicates it was produced in the early 20th century, allowing space for both correspondence and an address. The postage rate box specifies ½d for inland mail and 1d for foreign destinations, reflecting the British colonial postal system in Gibraltar.
