The Ndebele, one of the smallest tribes in the region, are renowned for their vibrantly painted homes and equally colorful attire. The intricate beadwork on these dolls reflects the detailed craftsmanship seen in the traditional clothing of Ndebele women.

In Ndebele culture, courtship begins when a suitor places a doll outside a young woman's hut, signaling his intent to propose. When a woman is about to marry, she is given a doll to care for, which she names. Her first child is then named after this doll.
