This postcard features the historic seafront of Saint-Malo, located on the Côte d'Émeraude (Emerald Coast) of Brittany, France. The image captures elegantly dressed visitors strolling along the fortified ramparts near the Tour Qui-Qu’en-Grogne, an imposing round tower that forms part of the city’s ancient walls.
Saint-Malo, once a fortified island and haven for privateers, has long been a symbol of Breton resilience and maritime strength. The Tour Qui-Qu’en-Grogne, built in the late 15th century under the reign of Anne of Brittany, earned its curious name—translated loosely as “Whoever grumbles, let them”—due to resistance from the city’s independent-minded citizens. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Saint-Malo transformed into a picturesque seaside resort, attracting visitors to its walled city, scenic beaches, and cultural heritage.
This postcard follows the Union Postale Universelle format.
