This postcard depicts La Porte de Boulogne, one of the historic gateways of Montreuil-sur-Mer, a fortified town in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France.
Montreuil-sur-Mer is renowned for its remarkably preserved medieval fortifications, much of which date back to the 13th and 16th centuries. La Porte de Boulogne was historically one of the main entrances to the walled town and took its name from the road leading to the nearby coastal city of Boulogne-sur-Mer. In earlier centuries, this route would have been vital for both commerce and military movement, linking Montreuil with the Channel ports.
The town's strategic importance led to substantial fortification work, especially under the reigns of Charles V and later Vauban, Louis XIV’s chief military engineer. Montreuil’s citadel and fortified walls became a model of defensive urban planning and were used during numerous conflicts, including the Hundred Years' War and the Franco-Prussian War.
