This postcard presents a peaceful scene from the Hortillonnages of Amiens, highlighting Robinson Isle (L'Île Robinson), one of the many islets within the marshland canals.
The Hortillonnages are a unique network of market gardens and canals spanning over 300 hectares in Amiens, northern France. These floating gardens, cultivated since Roman times, are bordered by narrow waterways only accessible by traditional boats known as barques à cornet. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this area became both a productive agricultural zone and a picturesque escape for city dwellers. Robinson Isle was one of the favored spots for picnicking and boat excursions, especially among the bourgeoisie of Amiens.
