1919 Antique Sterling Silver & Enamel Brooch House of Clare Maker Arthur Fenwick Birmingham Hallmarks Welsh Latin Mott

Front of the brooch has the de Clare family shield of red and yellow chevrons surmounted by an angel. Around the edge of the brooch is a Latin and Welsh bi-lingual motto: +JUVAT INTERGROS ACCEDERE FONTES + NERTH GWLAD EI GWYBODAU. This translates as A nation's strength is in its learning.... the motto of the University of South Wales & Monmouthshire, founded in the early 1880s.
