The Paseo de Gómiz, now known as the Explanada de España, has long been one of Alicante’s most iconic promenades. 
During the early 1900s, the floating balnearios (bathhouses) were a hallmark of Spanish coastal cities. These wooden structures, built on stilts over the sea, provided private changing rooms and shaded spaces for sunbathing and socializing. They were an essential part of Alicante’s transformation into a Mediterranean holiday destination, attracting aristocrats and middle-class vacationers who sought the health benefits of seawater bathing.
