Obverse:
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Germany’s most famous poets, on the right. To the left, the denomination "ZWANZIG MARK" (Twenty Marks) is printed prominently, along with "DER DEUTSCHEN DEMOKRATISCHEN REPUBLIK" (of the German Democratic Republic). Above the denomination, the issuing authority "STAATSBANK DER DDR" (State Bank of the GDR) is printed in small text. The serial number "JC983083" is printed twice, once in red on the upper left and again on the lower right.

Obverse lettering:

Reverse:
The reverse side depicts a group of schoolchildren exiting a building, symbolizing the education system of the GDR. The denomination "20" is also displayed in larger font on the right side.
