The Leica 250: A Milestone in the World of Photography

The Leica 250, also known as the "Reporter", is a significant model in the storied history of Leica cameras, renowned for its exceptional capacity and reliability in the field of photojournalism.

Introduced by the German company Leica Camera AG in 1933, the Leica 250 earned its nickname "Reporter" due to its widespread use by photojournalists. The camera's key distinguishing feature was its high film capacity. While most 35mm cameras of the era could only accommodate a standard roll of film containing 36 exposures, the Leica 250 was designed to take bulk rolls of film that could capture up to 250 exposures without reloading. This considerable capacity made it an ideal tool for photojournalists who needed to take numerous photographs rapidly, in situations where changing film might result in missed opportunities.

Aesthetically, the Leica 250 maintained the compact and durable design principles that Leica was known for. It featured a rangefinder for accurate focusing and was typically fitted with a collapsible Elmar 50mm f/3.5 lens, although it could be used with other Leica lenses as well.

The Leica 250 was produced between 1933 and 1942, with less than 4,000 units made. The production was halted due to the outbreak of World War II. Many of these cameras were used in the war, contributing to their relative scarcity today.

In terms of performance, the Leica 250 was noted for its exceptional image quality, in line with the high standards set by other Leica cameras. The use of 35mm film allowed for a good balance of image quality and compact size, while the camera's mechanical reliability ensured it could withstand the often harsh conditions faced by photojournalists.

In the present day, the Leica 250 is a highly sought-after model among vintage camera collectors due to its historical significance, rarity, and the reputation of the Leica brand. The legacy of the Leica 250 lives on in modern Leica cameras, which continue to be renowned for their image quality, craftsmanship, and durability.
