Chermayeff's early life was marked by his family's emigration to England following the Russian Revolution. He attended school in England and later pursued architectural studies at the University of Cambridge and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.

During his career, Serge Chermayeff became associated with the modernist movement, and his work reflected the principles of functionalism and geometric abstraction. He was also influenced by the Bauhaus school of design, which emphasized the integration of art and technology.

In the 1930s, Chermayeff co-founded the architectural firm "Lubetkin and Tecton," where he collaborated with Berthold Lubetkin on several notable projects. One of their most renowned works was the Highpoint apartment buildings in London, which are considered masterpieces of modernist architecture.

He co-founded the architectural firm "Chermayeff & Geismar," which became known for its innovative work in environmental graphics, corporate identity, and exhibition design. The firm's projects included iconic graphic designs such as the NBC peacock logo and the Pan Am globe logo.
